Halifax is hard on roofs. On the older South End and North End housing stock, ventilation is usually where the trouble begins.

2. Acadia Roofing and Contracting
Founded in 1972 and based in Port Williams, Acadia holds an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and works into Halifax on re-roofs and low-slope commercial jobs. It installs GAF, IKO, BP, CertainTeed, and Soprema, a wider material range than most local firms carry.
3. Central Roofing
Operating from Lacewood Drive in Clayton Park with more than 25 years behind it, Central is an IKO certified installer covering the HRM. Flat and low slope work is a genuine specialty, and the certification allows warranties covering shingles and installation together.
4. Classic Roofing and Siding
In business since 1989 and BBB accredited with an A+ rating, Classic serves Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville. It handles roofing, siding, windows, doors, gutters and exterior renovations, which suits homeowners tackling the whole envelope at once.
5. El Nino Roofing
Working out of Halifax since 1998, El Nino covers asphalt, metal and flat roofing plus gutters, soffit, fascia, attic ventilation and insulation. Crews are employed rather than subcontracted, and emergency callouts are part of the service.
6. Mader’s Roofing
Established in 1993, BBB accredited with an A+ rating and in good standing with the provincial Workers’ Compensation Board, Mader’s serves Halifax, Bedford, Lower Sackville and Dartmouth. Workmanship coverage runs five years, and the owner is usually the person a homeowner deals with directly.
7. Refined Roofing
Based on Acadia Street in Halifax with an A+ BBB rating, Refined is a CertainTeed Master Shingler holding COR safety, torch work and fall protection certification. Services cover asphalt, metal and flat roofing, chimney repair and drainage.
8. Sterling Roofing Group
Founded in 1996 by Richard Sterling, the company covers Halifax, Bedford and Dartmouth for inspections, repairs and installations, and works regularly with insurers on wind and storm claims. Financing runs up to 60 months.
Reading a top rating properly
Collect three written, itemised quotes and ask every company the same questions. Is the crew employed or subcontracted? Can you see current proof of liability coverage and workers’ compensation standing? On tight peninsula lots, confirm that access and staging are priced into the quote rather than added later. A number well below the others usually means thinner underlayment or a ventilation fault left uncorrected.
Then ask the question that separates the field. Is the workmanship warranty backed by the contractor, or by the shingle manufacturer? Contractor backed coverage lasts exactly as long as the contractor does, and roofing companies close. Manufacturer backed coverage depends on a certification the installer has to earn and keep, which is why only a handful of firms in Nova Scotia can register it.
Where to start
Book inspections with two or three of these companies before the autumn weather closes in, while crews across the HRM still have capacity and you are not negotiating under a tarp. Ask each one to put the attic and ventilation assessment in writing beside the shingle price, because Halifax roofs that fail early usually fail for reasons that started underneath.
